This week has been a bit of a non-starter for me unfortunately. As well as my bad back and knee problems I also suffer from migraines (I know right, hypochondriac much?!)…I had an attack which wiped me out for a few days so sadly I couldn’t get out and get walking over that period as I just needed to lie down in a dark room, hold my head and feel sorry for myself.  I felt much better after a couple of days so I did manage to get out and do 3k - Again I just took it nice and easy and walked but with a good and steady stride, head up, chest out and I actually felt pretty good afterwards – Nice to get those endorphins surging around my body...

Week Two:

This week has been a bit of a non-starter for me unfortunately. As well as my bad back and knee problems I also suffer from migraines (I know right, hypochondriac much?!)…I had an attack which wiped me out for a few days so sadly I couldn’t get out and get walking over that period as I just needed to lie down in a dark room, hold my head and feel sorry for myself.  I felt much better after a couple of days so I did manage to get out and do 3k - Again I just took it nice and easy and walked but with a good and steady stride, head up, chest out and I actually felt pretty good afterwards – Nice to get those endorphins surging around my body.

Later in the week I also managed a walk from my house (right by the Rugby Club) to my friend’s house which is right at the end of Marina Drive. I’ve decided that I won’t do that particular route again for safety reasons, one car almost clipped me with their wing-mirror and I had to jump in a bush (dramatic, me?) to dodge another truck…I know I have a rather large hip-span but that is ridiculous! Anyway, I have yet to go out in the car and see what the distance actually is but we estimate that its about 5 miles…Which took me just under an hour – Again, I was mostly walking but I did throw in three one minute jogs in there, followed by a nice walk as the cool down.  My knees were really hurting towards the end and I was very stiff later on that night and walking like an old woman, bent over with loads of complaining but (at the time) I felt good for getting out there and doing it.

I feel like I could have made more of an effort this week...I’ve been a little distracted of late as I’ve been very busy in work and also been house-sitting and living out of a suitcase due to being in between apartments (the headache hasn't helped either).  I’ve finally moved into my new pad now so now more excuses, I know exactly where my iPod charger is and where my trainers are so I really must start hitting the roads, at least three times a week...

In my quest for fitness / miles on the bodyclock, I’ve decided to invest in a new all-singing, all-dancing watch that will tell me the exact distance that I’ve travelled, my heart-rate, calories consumed, average pace etc – This thing is pretty darned clever, the only thing is can’t do is actually run for me (shame).  I figure that being able to track the exact distance that I’ve covered will spur me on and keep me going and perhaps get me to say to myself “just one more mile”.  Watch this space…

About the author

Crazy Shelly Cox

My name is Shelly and I suck at running. I literally get out of breath if I get a run in my stockings. I hate running. I cannot even run for a minute without keeling over and gasping for breath. I have dodgy knees and had back surgery a few years ago so this has been my excuse to not pound the pavements over the last few years. I would say that I’m little miss average when it comes to exercise - I’m pretty out of shape and I definitely prefer my sofa to the gym!

Hopefully this is all about to change…I was truly inspired by James Murray and his goal to run ONE HUNDRED MILES so I have agreed to run (read: crawl) the Cayman Islands Half Marathon for the CIDA. James has guaranteed me (that is a BIG word) that I will be able to complete the 13.1 mile course by the time December rolls around. This remains to be seen, I am completely unfit but I am full of enthusiasm for this great cause. And anyway, it’s too late to back out now…This is my story, I’m hoping that people in my position will be able to relate to it and if I can inspire even one person to get off the sofa and give it a go then I will be happy.
